Spanish for Dummies

It's so great that the U.S. outlawed slavery so many years ago.

The world is coming to an end ... steal BIKES!

Mystery still surrounds the Toronto bikeshop owner who was recently fingered for biketheft. Igor’s operation alone might explain most of Toronto’s reputation for being the capital of bike theft in North America. His shop was so filled with bicycles that police had to take out second floor windows and lower the bikes out them. Clearly this collection has been growing for a very long time.

His shop even had a reputation as the place to go to buy back your stolen bike - but no one knew for sure that he was the one stealing them. Rumor has it he was waiting for a big energy crisis where the world as we know it would come to an end and he could make a killing reselling the rest.

Watch this video of how easy it is to steal a bike in broad daylight in New York City.

Welcome, Rich White Oligarchs!

I love the daily show and Stephen Colbert, and this billboard strategically placed for the Republican National Convention is right on!
Oligarch [wikipedia link]

Keeping it all in perspective

Several years ago, I lived in a 5th floor apt., just at treetop level, and a pair of Purple Finches made a nest on my balcony. For many weeks I watched the eggs be laid, the baby birds hatched and screaming with their open mouths for food.

One day, as I was swelling with parental pride at how large they were getting, I was horrified to see a Blue Jay pluck one of the babies from the nest!

I told my neighbour across the hall, an elderly woman who had lived there for 25 years, about the tragedy and she told me she had had a similar experience. However, she related that her own shock at the brutality of nature, quickly became muted by the fact she was eating chicken at the time!

The pictorial article after the link illustrates this poignant story of life and death.

On the inside looking in!

As you watch this video, try to convince yourself that the front half of the sphere is transparent and that the mural is painted on the concave interior of the farther side. If you succeed, the spin will seem to reverse direction and you'll find yourself inside the painting.

Dick Termes paints murals on spheres. And he does it with a unique "six-point" perspective technique that permits a remarkable optical illusion.

Just under the video is a link to another illusion video.

Honesty: The Date

Another instalment from the Honesty series. Thank goodness that we don't say exactly what we are thinking!

More on the Fat Front

Although we all wish we had a little less of it, fat is essential for managing our energy balance and helping to regulate body temperature.

But there are two distinct types of fat tissue: white 'bad' fat acts as an energy store whereas brown 'good' fat helps in burning calories to generate body heat.

Now one team has shown how to promote the manufacture of "good" brown fat, so we can burn more calories, while a second team has shown how brown fat and muscle are linked, suggesting ways to interconvert the two. Both offer a new strategy to fight flab.

Weird Things About Water

Water, good ol' H2O, seems like a pretty simple substance to you and me. But in reality, water - the foundation of life and most common of liquid - is really weird and scientists actually don't completely understand how water works.

What a Billion Muslims Really Think

Who Speaks for Islam? is the product of the Gallup World Poll's massive, multiyear research study. As part of this groundbreaking project, Gallup conducted tens of thousands of interviews with residents of more than 35 nations that are predominantly Muslim or have significant Muslim populations.

Gallup brings data-driven evidence -- the voices of a billion Muslims, not those of individual "experts" or "extremists" -- to one of the most heated and consequential debates of our time.

Whom should we trust?

Researchers have discovered that surprisingly small factors - where we meet someone, whether their posture mimics ours, even the slope of their eyebrows or the thickness of their chin - can matter as much or more than what they say about themselves.
We size up someone's trustworthiness within milliseconds of meeting them, and while we can revise our first impression, there are powerful psychological tendencies that often prevent us from doing so - tendencies that apply even more strongly if we've grown close.

Iran's heartbreaking "solution" to homosexuality

An Iranian-born filmmaker learned that in Iran, homosexuality is a crime punishable by death. But the government has provided a way out for the nation’s gays and lesbians: a sex-change operation. Fully paid for by the state, the procedure would allow these people to conform to Iran’s theocratic standards of sexuality.

Eshaghian's film reveals a culture so steeped in hatred of gays and lesbians that it deems a sex change preferable to simply accepting differences in sexual orientation.

The Traffic Guru

by Tom Vanderbilt

Our behavior is heavily influenced by the decisions of Traffic Engineers every day. If you were asked to name a famous Traffic Engineer, though, chances are slight you would credit the onetime New York City traffic czar, Henry Barnes, with inventing the “Barnes Dance” - wherein an entire intersection is given over to a four-way pedestrian crossing.

One traffic engineer, however, did achieve a measure of global celebrity with his ideas. The idea that made Hans Monderman most famous is that traditional traffic safety infrastructure - signs, lights, curbs, lines, and so on - is not only often unnecessary, but can endanger those it is meant to protect.

Killer Carbs: Scientist Finds Key To Overeating As We Age

A Monash University scientist has discovered that key appetite control cells in the human brain degenerate over time, causing increased hunger and potentially weight-gain as we grow older.

As published in Nature, the research by Dr Zane Andrews, a neuroendocrinologist found that the degeneration is more significant following meals rich in carbohydrates and sugars.

California referendum trying to ban Gay marriage

With less than 11 weeks until Election Day, supporters of Proposition 8 are ramping up their field organization and refining their message as they seek to persuade California voters to shut the door on same-sex marriage. It's the first time voters will be asked to weigh in on the issue in either California or Massachusetts — the states where gays have won the right to wed.

The initiative is a constitutional amendment, similar to ones already enacted in 26 other states, that would overturn the California Supreme Court decision that legalized same-sex marriage. It needs a simple majority of votes to pass in an upcoming referendum.

Airport Security: Shoes, belts, laptop, shampoo ... bra!

Like most travelers in the post-Sept. 11 world of heightened airport scrutiny, Berkeley resident Nancy Kates is familiar with the drill: Shoes, belts, laptop, shampoo.

For Kates, though, the security check at Oakland International Airport got too invasive. A big-busted woman wearing a large underwire bra, she set off the metal detector and was checked by a female TSA agent with a metal-sensitive wand.

"The woman touched my breast. I said, 'You can't do that,' " Kates said. "She said, 'We have to pat you down.' I said, 'You can't treat me as a criminal for wearing a bra.' "

North Korea develops a noodle that delays feelings of hunger

Noodles made from corn and soybeans left people feeling fuller longer and represented a technological breakthrough, the Choson Shinbo newspaper said.

North Korea is dependent on foreign food aid. Last month the UN warned that residents were experiencing their worst food shortages in a decade.

But the communist country remains reluctant to allow experts to fully assess the scale of the problem or give them adequate access to deliver aid.

Star Trek weapon seized in knives amnesty

This dangerous-looking five-foot-long weapon has been recovered by police in Gloucester. The shocked officers who took custody of it, are using it to publicize a five-week period during which they hope around 30,000 weapons will be handed in.

A spokesman for police said: "It is a particularly nasty blade that can, literally, take someone's head off. We are very glad it is off the streets and we want more weapons handed in."

The blade is believed to be a stainless-steel copy of a Klingon weapon called a Batliff from the science fiction series Star Trek.

Stop thinking platforms, start thinking markets

Today, platform wars ain't what they used to be. On the one hand, there's Facebook - playing a textbook game of platform strategy, but slowly suffocating the utility of its own network. On the other, there's Apple - ignoring many of the rules of platform strategy, but radically redesigning the long-suffering mobile value chain with the iPhone App Store.
The App Store's name is revealing: it tells us that Apple doesn't see a platform to be manipulated, but a market to be made. It is that understanding that's at the heart of Apple's furious domination of the mediascape.

Do the Chinese think Westerners look all alike?

This video seems to suggest so. In the West, there's some who think Asians, especially those from China, Japan, and Korea, look pretty much the same.

But perhaps less-than-honed cross-border facial recognition is a universal problem. It seems in China, Westerners all look the same too.

In this clip, a BBC reporter is confused for U.S. swimmer Michael Phelps. Hilarity ensues.

Conservative countries + scantily clad Olympic athletes

In Beijing, Roqaya al-Gassra of Bahrain won her heat in the second round of the women's 200-meter dash while wearing long pants, long sleeves, and a head covering, in keeping with her practice of Islam. Many female Olympians wear athletic clothing that does not cover their bodies; are their events broadcast in conservative countries?

..."and on your left, the Gays."

For gay and lesbian residents, who are doing nothing more remarkable than, say, walking over to Cliff's Hardware Store, the idea that as many as six tour buses could turn up at once seems bizarre. They also worry that the upcoming release of the movie "Milk," based on the life story of Castro Street politician Harvey Milk, will just be another step toward turning the Castro into a kind of urban theme park for looky-loos.

Emily - the woman in the animation - was produced using a new modelling technology that enables the most minute details of a facial expression to be captured and recreated.

New York City Installs David Byrne-Designed Bike Racks

Nine new, whimsical designs expected to spark interest in cycling among New Yorkers while adding eye-catching art to the City's streets
"By bringing attractive yet functional sculptures to our streets, we are elevating the profile of cycling, and we believe that more and more people will begin to think about cycling as a mode of transportation, and not just a mode of recreation," said Commissioner Sadik-Khan. "Regular bike riders have an eagle eye for our current bike racks but these nine installations will capture the attention of all New Yorkers."

A Black Hole as Art

This extraordinary structure on took motorists by surprise. Artists Dan Havel and Dean Ruck were responsible for this house installation. The two wooden buildings were to be replaced by a new built project so the few months before the demolition, they made this into an architectonic installation. Violin maverick Eugene Draw smashes genres - and expectations

It?s safe to say that violinist Eugene Draw was the only player at last month?s Toronto Beaches Jazz Festival to jump off the stage and into the crowd while soloing. His band, Dr. Draw, is comprised of guitar, bass and drums augmented with keys and harp, and it pounds out layers of spliced styles including bluegrass and rock with Latin and gypsy rhythms, or Romanian wedding music mixed with ska and jamrock ? all in the same song.
Draw started off as an aggressive middle-school fiddler performing thrash and skatepunk, but he dropped out of Montreal?s alternative scene because he was tired of scenester restrictiveness.

Big Brother has new techniques for watching you

Fingerprint test tells much more than identity
With a new analytical technique, a fingerprint can reveal much more than the identity of a person. It can also identify what the person has been touching ? drugs, explosives or poisons, for example.
Writing in the Friday issue of the journal Science, R. Graham Cooks, a professor of chemistry at Purdue University, and his colleagues describe how a laboratory technique known as mass spectrometry could find a wider application in crime investigations.
The equipment to perform such tests is already commercially available, although expensive. Smaller, cheaper, portable versions are probably only a couple of years away.
