Sports stars show their support

OUT magazine has gathered together a beautiful series of images "of straight sports stars who have stood up for fairness and tolerance, shoulder-to-shoulder with their LGBT peers."

Ben Cohen, Hudson Taylor, Michael Irvin, Mike Chabala, and Nick Youngquest
The world of pro sports is notoriously unwelcoming to out athletes, one of the last bastions of homophobia. From hate-filled fans to teammates who won’t share the showers to bigoted sportscasters, the toxic environment can ruin a career or even end a life. But at the vanguard of a move to change that is a small band of straight sports stars who have stood up for fairness and tolerance, shoulder-to-shoulder with their LGBT peers. Here, we salute them.

Give Adam Levine a hand

I like this campaign much better than that mustache-thing! LOL

In a case of life imitating art, Maroon 5 frontman Adam Levine has brought the name of the band's recent album, "Hands All Over," to life in a stunning nude pictorial – all for a good cause.

Levine, 31, appears stripped down in the February issue of
British Cosmopolitan with the hands of his girlfriend, Victoria's Secret model Anne Vyalitsyna, covering his privates.

The shoot was done on behalf of
Everyman, which is "the UK's leading prostate and testicular cancer campaign," according to its website.

• the role of sexual difference in depicting modern America
• how artists explored the fluidity of sexuality and gender
• how major themes in modern art - especially abstration - were influenced by social marginalization

TV Pundit Stephen Colbert's attack on ice access brushed off by Olympic officials

Vancouver Olympic officials are defending themselves after an attack by U.S. comedian Stephen Colbert, who accused Canadians of cheating by preventing U.S. athletes from getting enough ice time on the Richmond, B.C., speedskating oval.

VANOC's Renee Smith-Valade said she gets the jokes, but the American team and all other international teams are being treated fairly.

"He's just trying to push our buttons. I like Stephen Colbert, I think he's funny," said Smith-Valade.

'I'm calling on Saskatche-whiners to unclench their frosty sphincters and let Americans on to their oval.'—U.S. comedian Stephen Colbert

The Colbert Report recently signed on as the sponsor of the U.S. speedskating team after the previous sponsor, Dutch bank DSB, went bankrupt in October.

On Thursday's show, Colbert turned his attention to the team's access to the Canadian ice.

"Those syrup suckers won't let us practice at their Olympic venues.… At the Salt Lake Games, we let the Canadian luge team take 100 practice runs ... and you know how Mormons feel about two men lying down on each other," said the tongue-in-cheek night talk-show host.

Actors condemn Harper's culture cuts

Canada's top film and television performers gathered in Toronto Wednesday to condemn the $45 million in cuts to culture funding announced by the Conservative government in August, saying the cuts will cripple the Canadian arts industry.

Canadian actress Wendy Crewson kicked off the event, saying Canadian artists are "fed up" with the cuts and want to see a return to stable funding for the arts.

"Culture is critical to our identity as a country and is a huge part of our economy," Crewson said. "These policies are job killers, and artists will not stand by and allow these attacks on our industry to continue without a fight."

Stephen Harper has called the culture cuts a niche topic, saying that "ordinary Canadians" are not particularly concerned with them.

Brad Pitt donates $100,000 to support gay marriage rights

Film star Brad Pitt has donated $100,000 to oppose a California referendum seeking to ban gay marriage, The Los Angeles Times reported.

Gay marriage has been legal in California since June.

He and partner Angelina Jolie have said they would wed when everyone who wants to get married in the United States is able to do so. Same-sex marriages are illegal in most US states.
