Popping a Pink Cherry

Comments made by sports celebrity Don Cherry against "pinkos" during the swearing-in of Toronto Mayor Rob Ford have caused a stir.

Cherry, invited by Ford to the ceremony, said he specifically chose to wear a flamboyant pink jacket.
"Well, actually I'm wearing pinko for all the pinkos out there that ride bicycles and everything," he said.

Maybe Texas ain't so bad after all!

On Saturday, Houston, Texas became the first major U.S. city to elect an openly gay mayor, Annise Parker, after a hotly contested run-off election that gave gay and lesbian supporters a symbolic victory following defeats over legalizing same-sex marriages in California and Maine.

"The voters of Houston have opened the door to history," Parker told supporters at a convention center in Houston. "I know what this win means to many of us who never thought we could achieve high office."

The early bird beats up the protester

The Denver police union is selling T-shirts that poke fun at protesters at last month's Democratic National Convention, but the main target isn't laughing.

The back of the shirts reads, "We get up early to beat the crowds" and "2008 DNC," and has a caricature of a police officer holding a baton.

United we vote for the environment

VoteForEnvironment.ca was designed by Canadians who believe that we must start to reduce our fossil fuel pollution now to save the planet from dangerous climate change.

The Harper Government’s collusion with the Bush White House to obstruct progress on climate change at recent international summits does not reflect how Canadians want their leaders to behave on the world stage. Harper and the Conservative Party are simply not in step with what scientists say is needed, and with economic benefits of dealing with climate change.

All the other major Parties have programs that seriously address our critical climate concerns and are talking about them in this election.

The Copyright Pledge Gains Momentum

The Green Party and NDP Candidates On Board ...
Will you commit to a balanced approach to copyright reform that reflects the views of all Canadians by pledging:
  1. To respect the rights of creators and consumers,
  2. Not to support any copyright bill that undermines or weakens the Copyright Act’s users rights,
  3. To fully consult with Canadians before introducing any copyright reform bill and to conduct inclusive, national hearings on any tabled bill ?
  • Yes
  • No
  • Oui
  • Non

This was the question being put to politicians last week, as part of the 2008 Election Copyright Pledge that focused on three commitments for copyright reform in Canada :
  • respecting both creators and consumers,
  • ensuring that any reforms do not undermine or weaken user rights such as fair dealing, and
  • committing to full public consultations on any reforms before introducing a bill and inclusive hearings once tabled.
The initial reaction to the pledge has been very strong.
The Green Party
(as a party) has agreed to the pledge. In addition, the following NDP MPs have added their names as supporters:
  • Charlie Angus, New Democrat MP, Timmins-James Bay, ON
  • Olivia Chow, New Democrat MP, Trinity-Spadina, ON
  • Libby Davies, New Democrat MP, Vancouver East, BC
  • Michael Byers, New Democrat Candidate, Vancouver Centre, BC
  • Anne Lagacé Dowson, New Democrat Candidate, Westmount, QC
  • Phil Brown, New Democrat Candidate, Nepean-Carleton, ON
  • John Chan, New Democrat Candidate, Calgary Centre-North, AB
  • Tyler Kinch, New Democrat Candidate, Calgary Centre, AB
There is still time before the election to raise the issue with local candidates.

Sarah Palin uses fascist's words to illustrate her philosophy

“Republican vice-presidential nominee Sarah Palin quoted an unidentified “writer” who extolled the virtues of small-town America: “We grow good people in our small towns, with honesty and sincerity and dignity.” (9/3/08) The unidentified writer was Westbrook Pegler (1894-1969), the ultraconservative newspaper columnist whose widely syndicated columns (at its peak, 200 newspapers and 12 million readers) targeted the New Deal establishment, labor leaders, intellectuals, homosexuals, Jews, and poets.”

More female candidates on ballot in federal election than ever before

A record number of women are among the 1,601 candidates vying for the approval of voters and 308 House of Commons seats in the federal election campaign, according to Elections Canada.

But while women represent more than 50 per cent of the Canadian population, only 437 of the candidates — 27 per cent — are female.

"This improvement provides more opportunities than ever to increase the representation of women in Parliament," Equal Voice chairwoman Raylene Lang-Dion said.

All five major parties have made strides since the last election in getting more women to run, although the Tories continue to lag behind the others.

Everyone but Conservative: 4 parties share arts platforms in Ottawa

Last Wednesday, hundreds of people from Ottawa's arts community heard how the federal government will support arts and culture — but only if the Conservatives are NOT elected during the federal election on Oct. 14.

Following noisy rallies in Montreal and Toronto, artists in Ottawa held the bilingual "Vote Culture Town Hall" at the University of Ottawa campus, inviting candidates from all five major parties.

Not one Tory candidate showed up to field questions and hear concerns about arts, culture and heritage policies and funding.

Actors condemn Harper's culture cuts

Canada's top film and television performers gathered in Toronto Wednesday to condemn the $45 million in cuts to culture funding announced by the Conservative government in August, saying the cuts will cripple the Canadian arts industry.

Canadian actress Wendy Crewson kicked off the event, saying Canadian artists are "fed up" with the cuts and want to see a return to stable funding for the arts.

"Culture is critical to our identity as a country and is a huge part of our economy," Crewson said. "These policies are job killers, and artists will not stand by and allow these attacks on our industry to continue without a fight."

Stephen Harper has called the culture cuts a niche topic, saying that "ordinary Canadians" are not particularly concerned with them.

When Jeremy comes marching home again, Hurrah!

With less than a week before U.S. Iraq war resister Jeremy Hinzman and his family are to be deported, the Liberals have reaffirmed their support for his fight to stay in Canada.

The 29-year-old Hinzman, his wife, Nga Nguyen, and their children — six-year-old Liam and six-week-old Meghan — have been ordered to leave Canada by Sept. 23 or face deportation.

Fresh off the campaign trail, Liberal Bob Rae spoke at a Toronto news conference with Hinzman. Rae urged the government to support a motion passed earlier this year by all parties, except the Conservatives, to let conscientious objectors take up permanent residence.

N&L Premier urges: Vote Anything But Conservative

Newfoundland and Labrador Premier Danny Williams made his "ABC," or Anything But Conservative, campaign official on Tuesday by registering his crusade against Stephen Harper's Conservatives with Elections Canada and obtaining "third party" status.

It's just the latest move by Williams, a Progressive Conservative, to ramp up his fight to prevent the re-election of Stephen Harper in the Oct. 14 federal election.

Williams has waged a war of words with Harper ever since the leader reneged on a 2006 election promise to exclude non-renewable energy sources from the equalization formula.

Republicans plan to foreclose on voters' rights

The chairman of the Republican Party in Macomb County, Michigan, a key swing county in a key swing state, is planning to use a list of foreclosed homes to block people from voting in the upcoming election as part of the state GOP’s effort to challenge some voters on Election Day.

“We will have a list of foreclosed homes and will make sure people aren’t voting from those addresses,” party chairman James Carabelli told Michigan Messenger in a telephone interview earlier this week. He said the local party wanted to make sure that proper electoral procedures were followed.

A fetishistic approach to security

We spend far more effort defending our countries against specific movie-plot threats, rather than the real, broad threats. In the US during the months after the 9/11 attacks, we feared terrorists with scuba gear, terrorists with crop dusters and terrorists contaminating our milk supply. Both the UK and the US fear terrorists with small bottles of liquid. Our imaginations run wild with vivid specific threats. Before long, we're envisioning an entire movie plot, without Bruce Willis saving the day. And we're scared.
