Electronic Eyes

Contact lenses that help enhance normal vision with megapixel 3D panoramic images are being designed by scientists using military funding and may be available as early as 2014. For those who do not want to rely on contact lenses, future versions could involve lenses directly implanted within the eye, researchers added.

Over the decades, the video displays that everyone from fighter pilots to the general public use have grown increasingly complex. One possibility for advanced displays is a virtual reality (VR) system that replaces our view of the real world with computer-generated vistas. Another idea consists of augmented reality (AR) displays that overlay computer-generated images over real-world environments. However, these often require bulky apparatus such as oversized helmets.

Life imitates Apple

It’s an Apple store!
Or is it?
They looked like Apple products. It looked like an Apple store. It had the classic Apple store winding staircase and weird upstairs sitting area.

The employees were even wearing those blue t-shirts with the chunky Apple name tags around their necks.

This story has been propelled into the online world from the moment it first appeared by the original blog (post title link) - it has been only a couple of days and this story has been covered on BBC, Wall Street Journal, and even the Toronto Star.

Someone in Kunming, China has created this store to an exacting degree. Apple doesn't recognize them or the products they are selling. Will be interesting to see what happens.

China's latest craze: dyeing pets to look like other wild animals

They only look like pandas.
Dyeing pets has been a trend in pet pampering for quite some time. At last summer's Pets Show Taipei, there was a fierce dog-dyeing competition. Check out photos.
But dyeing your pets to look like other wild animals is a more recent development.
The trend demonstrates how quickly and dramatically attitudes toward pets — particularly dogs — have changed in many parts of Asia.

The world really IS flat!

An eye-popping optical illusion created by Parisian artist François Abelanet is on display outside Paris City Hall. This work of art looks like a giant grass sphere, but it's actually flat.

Watch this video in French that describes the construction of this anamorphic 'global park'.

It's all how you look at it

With a few supplies and some careful cutting and pasting, you can build this gravity-defying structure that won the 2010 Best Illusion of the Year Contest. Created by Japanese mathematical engineer Kokichi Sugihara, the magnetlike slopes illusion is cleverly designed to make marbles roll "uphill." It's a trick of perspective.

Was The King's Speech filmed on a Porn set?

Have you seen The King's Speech?

Well it looks like key scenes of the award-winning movie were filmed on the same set as scenes from a recent gay porn video from UK Naked Men. UK Naked Men is a very popular XXX website that produces original content featuring men from the British Isles.

In the first instance the space is depicted as a comfortable, and very royal, sitting room whereas in the UKNM video it is described as a 'dingy run-down snooker club'.

33 Portland Place is one of the largest and most remarkable houses in London: a rare and exquisite example of a magnificent eighteenth century residence. It is where Edward Davenport and his celebrity friends host the most glamorous and exclusive parties in London.

"For the world is hollow and I have touched the sky"

Despite a number of uncanny experiences with Town & Country magazine's back page, and a statistically improbable collection of Gemininian friends (cuz only a Gemini can really understand another Gemini!), I do not believe in Astrology. In fact, over the years I have unwittingly started several angry arguments with people who are into Astrology by questioning their pseudo-science.
"Okay, I understand that you can calculate the position of the sun, moon, planets and stars to exacting degrees, but who decided that the positions of the spheres when someone was born indicate particular qualities?"
"HUMANS, that's who! The interpretations are completely subjective!"
They would usually assume their fallback position by accusing me of not understanding the precision of their charts, and that they are merely describing where things are - stars don't lie.

But, until a few weeks ago, I never imagined that even their math was flawed ... that's just crazy talk!

Turns out that their "precision" forgets about "precession" and the actual positions of objects in the sky don't match what their charts say. Not only do all of the Zodiac signs have the wrong dates, but there are actually 13 signs, not 12. And, it is a lot harder to draw things with 13 sections than it is with only 12.

New Zodiac Signs
Capricorn • January 20 - February 16
Aquarius • February 17 - March 11
Pisces • March 12 - April 18
Aries • April 19 - May 13
Taurus • May 14 - June 21
Gemini • June 22 - July 20
Cancer • July 21 - August 10
Leo • August 11 - September 16
Virgo • September 17 - October 30
Libra • October 31 - November 23
Scorpio • November 24 - 29
Ophiuchus • November 30 - December 17
Sagittarius • December 18 - January 20

Have a listen to this short interview with the scientist that has stirred up a scandalous storm of stellar proportions by suggesting that Astrologers' charts are wrong.

THAT means that, even if I DID believe in Astrology, rather than being a "
" Gemini, I am actually a 'solid, practical, extremely determined and strong-willed' Taurus. But, me and 'Bull' rarely see eye-to-eye. Now,
I am going to have to redefine my entire personality to match the magical truthiness of Astrology.

With this new information, I really wish I had been born at the beginning of December so that I could identify with Ophiuchus ( being careful not too mis-pronounce it though ) because then everyone would assume I was wielding a big snake (nudge, nudge, wink, wink).

Ophiuchus holds a huge snake, Serpens, in both hands as shown in the Atlas Coelestis of John Flamsteed. Serpens is unique in being divided into two halves.

Chances are the people who believe what they want to believe rather than the facts will continue to do so, hoping the truth will slowly fade into the background for another 2,000 years (when I guess I will be an Aries). But unfortunately, to quote an old friend and her Tarot cards, the stars don't lie.

I predict that a new cult of 'True Astrologers', flanked by their newfound Ophiuchian (pron.?) friends will now descend from the heavens and tell us all that THEY are the aliens that seeded our planet with Life, and we should now call them God... I can hardly wait.

Until then, I guess I should start calling up all of my old, happily twinned, Gemininian friends and tell them that it's over, cuz things get REALLY CRAZY when a bunch of bulls get together.

Taming Light

What happens when a beam of light travels through transparent textured materials? If you are Alan Jaras (or Reciprocity on Flickr), you can make it refract into a gorgeous array of colors. Bridging the gap between art and science, Jaras bends, twists and turns light...like you've never seen.

These are analogue images of the refraction patterns of a beam of light passing through various transparent objects (in this case a piece of textured glass). The image is captured directly on to 35mm film, no camera lens is used ( this is a photogram using film instead of photographic paper), the transparent object replaces the lens. Colour is introduced by placing specially prepared coloured filters directly in the light beam. This is an analogue image and has not been computer generated or colour treated. The colours you see are a faithful reproduction of those captured on film.

A moment in time

Dutch artist Peter Jansen creates polyamide and bronze sculptures that look like a split second in time. They don’t actually move, but they look like they are in motion.

Perhaps appropriately, he started out as a physics student rather than as an artist.

Water flowing uphill? It's just WRONG!

Crowds at the Chelsea Flower Show have been queuing up 10-deep to see part of the Daily Telegraph's Silver Gilt award-winning garden - a fountain in which water apparently runs uphill. It is a sight which defies logic, and has become probably the most memorable image of this year's show.

A set of four glass ramps positioned in a square clearly show water travelling up each of them before it pours off the top, only to start again at the bottom of the next ramp.

Inventor James Dyson, he of the bagless vacuum cleaner, has stolen the headlines from the gardeners at this year's Chelsea Flower Show with his "Wrong Garden". Mr Dyson says his inspiration was a drawing by the Dutch artist MC Escher - an optical illusion that shows water going uphill and round and round the four sides of a square perpetually.

You are getting sleepy ... and thinner

A woman in England has lost nearly 60 lbs after being hypnotized into believing she had surgery for a gastric stomach band.

A therapist convinced Marion Corns, 35, she had had surgery to fit the band by talking her through the procedure while in a trance. Hospital smells were even pumped into the room to boost the effect.

Housewife Marion, who has slimmed from 216 lbs to 161 lb , said: “Bizarrely I can even ‘remember’ being wheeled into theatre, the clink of the surgeon’s knife and smell of the anaesthetic.”

For those who have wished they had a third arm!

Although noone else can see it, a 64-year-old woman has reported to doctors at Geneva University Hospital the presence of a pale, milky-white and translucent third arm.

After examining the case, the woman's neurologist, Asaid Khateb of the hospital's experimental neurophysiology laboratory, called the rare phenomenon credible.

The arm appeared to the woman a few days after suffering a stroke, doctors said.

But this case of what is known as a supernumerary phantom limb (SPL) is a genuine head-scratcher.

The upshot is that the woman can use the apparitional extremity to relieve very real itches on the cheek. It cannot penetrate solid objects. She does not always perceive the arm but "retrieves" it when needed, doctors told the Swiss news agency.

Khateb said the exact cause of the imaginary arm remains a mystery. Supernumerary limbs are rare. There are only nine known cases of a patient both feeling and seeing an arm.
