Provocative Hungarian Poster for ‘Shame’ - A Bold And Anguished Look at Addiction
The addiction is sex, a fact which elicited an NC-17 rating, though it is shown here, while unavoidably gratuitous, as no different than an addiction to booze or pills or powders. It is all-consuming and painfully unpleasurable.

Hot zones for single men?

It’s an urban legend repeated by cab drivers, echoed by bartenders and passed on by hairdressers. Anyone who has lived in Ottawa for a few months has probably heard the theory:
Single women outnumber single men in the capital by a stunning 3:1 ratio.
The high proportion of women working in the federal public service skews the numbers, leaving armies of lonely spinsters unable to get a date and a happy cohort of bachelors to feast on the pick of the litter.

Or so the story goes.

Around Ottawa, however, there are more single women in the city proper, while men cluster on the outskirts, with a few exceptions.

Sexual Minority Stress & Mental Health

Sexual minority stress, along with aging-related stress, jeopardizes the mental health of midlife and older gay men, according to a new study published by the American Journal of Public Health. In the study, sexual minority stress included the men’s perceptions that they needed to conceal their sexual orientation or being avoided because of their sexual orientation.

The study also found that legal marriage for same-sex couples may confer a unique protective effect against poor mental health. Having a same-sex domestic partner or same-sex spouse boosted the emotional health of the studied men, but having a same-sex legal spouse appeared to be the most beneficial relationship arrangement.

“This study shines a light on the mental health of a generation of gay men who survived the early years of the AIDS crisis and came of age on the heels of the gay rights movement.”

The study’s findings further suggest that targeted campaigns may be necessary to address this generation of gay men’s heightened risk for poor mental health. Sexual orientation stigma, the loss of many of their peers to AIDS and general aging-related stress, such as concerns over finances and independence, also affected the mental health of these midlife and older gay men.

Dying Regrets

Bronnie Ware, the author of this article, worked in palliative care for many years. Her patients were those who had gone home to die. Some incredibly special times were shared. She was with them for the last three to twelve weeks of their lives.

When questioned about any regrets they had or anything they would do differently, common themes surfaced again and again.

Citrus sodas eat away teeth and bones in months

sheknows.com
Is Mountain Dew really so corrosive that it can dissolve a mouse carcass?

And if so, what does it do to your teeth and intestines?

Is Mountain Dew's classic slogan — "It'll tickle yore innards" — the world's most sickening understatement?

...
An attempt to win a small court battle this week has put Mountain Dew in peril of losing a much larger war.

PepsiCo, the soft drink's parent company, defended itself against a man who claimed he found a dead mouse in a can of the citrus soda.

Two major Canadian cultural exports — filmmaker James Cameron and the Cirque du Soleil — have teamed up for a 3D film project slated to hit theatres in 2012.

Paramount Pictures announced on Tuesday it would bring Cirque du Soleil Worlds Away to theatres around the globe later this year, though an exact release date has yet to be set.

The project was written and directed by Andrew Adamson, whose credits include family-friendly film series Shrek and The Chronicles of Narnia. Cameron, known for his blockbusters Avatar and Titanic as well as for his undersea documentaries, served as executive producer. The partnership was first announced in late 2010.

The forthcoming film features a story written expressly for the project and performances drawn from the many elaborate Cirque productions around the world.

A bit ain't bad, is it?

(Reuters Health) - A few hits on the bong now and then don't seem to have any detrimental effects on lung health, suggests a new study.

...

While marijuana smoke has a lot of the same toxins as cigarette smoke, people who use pot tend to smoke fewer joints per day than tobacco users do cigarettes.

That and the method of inhaling may offer some relative lung protection, researchers have proposed. Still, the findings don't let marijuana off the hook for long-term health consequences.
